Frequency measurement and pulse generator

Counter inputs

This module can be used to count pulses, determine the period duration of input signals and perform frequency measurements. In addition, the galvanic isolation of the inputs allows the connection of signals with different potentials in relation to the counter module.

Pulse generator

The integrated pulse generator can output square wave signals up to 5MHz. In addition, certain counting events can be linked to this output.

Automatic send and receive mode

Use our Auto RX/TX mode and automate the workflow of your DEDITEC product by independently processing or sending CAN packets from or to other participants in the network. With our free ICT-Tool you can define via a graphical user interface how the RX and TX packets should be processed. For example, you can read the values of an A/D converter and send them to a CAN module with D/A output.

Different configuration modes

The RO-CAN interface can be configured in three different ways and is selected via DIP switches:
The preferred mode with preset CAN default values, a DIP switch mode where all CAN specifications can be set via DIP switches or a software mode where the setup can be easily defined via our ICT-Tool.

LEDs

Each digital input and output has a separate LED that lights up when the signal state is active. Furthermore, the status of the operating voltage, the communication with the interface, error events or the occurrence of a timeout can be displayed.

Connectors

A screwless system from the manufacturer WAGO Kontakttechnik is used as the connector. The 1-wire female connectors are 100% protected against mismating and have an eject and locking mechanism. All conductor types up to 1.5mm² can be connected.

• Galvanic isolation for power supply from the module: 1kV
• Number of pulses to be generated adjustable: (0= infinitely many)
• Setting the low time (10ns steps)
• Setting of the high time (10ns steps) PWM outputs with e.g. the following modes:
• 0.5kHz – frequency PWM ratio with 0.01% resolution
• 5kHz – frequency PWM ratio with 0.1% resolution
• 50kHz – frequency PWM ratio with 1% resolution

The different counting modes

Main mode 1 • Counting pulses:
With this mode pulses can be counted on a rising edge. A reset is possible via software.
Main mode 2 • Period duration determination:
In this mode the period “T” of the applied input signal is measured. An internal 100MHz counter serves as a time base. At a rising edge of the input signal the 48 bit counter is latched and can be evaluated while the next signal is counted again.
Main mode 3 • Number measurement/frequency measurement:
This mode is used to measure the number of rising edges of the input signal within a given time. Here the times 1ms, 10ms, 100ms, 1sec. can be configured via software. This allows e.g. frequency measurements to be carried out.
Main mode 4 • PWM measurements:
With this mode the “high” time and the “low” time of a signal are measured with two different counters. This allows the high / low ratio to be determined (PWM). By using an internal 100MHz counter, extremely accurate PWM ratios can be determined.
Sub mode 1 • Counting pulses without “reset on read”:
With this mode pulses can be counted on a rising edge. When the counter is read, the counter is not reset but remains at its current value.
Sub mode 2 • Counting pulses with “reset on read”:
With this mode pulses can be counted on a rising edge. When reading the counter, the counter is reset at the same time.
Sub mode 3 • Counting pulses with “reset if channel 7 = 1”:
In this mode, counting is performed on the rising edge. In addition, the counter can be reset via an external signal (last channel of the module = 1).
Sub mode 4 • Read Latch-Counter:
With the latch instruction all 8 counter readings of the input counters are written into a buffer (latch) simultaneously. This mode can then be used to read out the latched counter reading.

Configuration

Configuration of CAN modules

Depending on the product series, our CAN modules can be configured either by software or DIP switches. Depending on the mode used, the modules are controlled via the open CAN protocol (2.0A or 2.0B) or via the automatic receive mode (Auto-RX) or automatic transmit mode (Auto-TX). The Auto-TX mode allows cyclic transmission of data packets, optionally with analog or digital input states to other CAN addresses. Alternatively, a trigger event can be defined. Here a data packet is only transmitted if a data packet on a certain CAN ID has been received before (e.g. CAN sync to ID 0x80). With the Auto-RX mode, however, received data packets are forwarded directly to analog or digital outputs. For example, relay outputs can be set via another CAN bus participant.

The 3 CAN operating modes

Depending on the product series, you can make CAN settings in different ways.

1. Software mode (for NET series, UC series, RO series and BS series)

In software mode, the parameters of the CAN interface are completely configured via the ICT-Tool included in the scope of delivery. In addition to the baud rate, CAN address and other settings, automatic send and receive packets can also be set up.

2. Preferred mode (RO series and BS series only)

If the product is operated in preferred mode, the following default values are used for communication:

  • Baud rate: 100 kHz
  • CAN-ID: 0x100
  • Master-ID: 1

3. Dip switch mode (RO series only)

The following CAN parameters can be set by means of DIP switches:

  • Baud rate
  • CAN address

M2M-CAN

Machine-to-machine, or M2M for short, involves direct communication between two or more modules. Analog or digital input signals from a transmitter module can be sent channel by channel via the CAN bus to channels on the receiver module. All DEDITEC products with a CAN interface are designed for automatic data exchange. M2M communication settings can be made using the ICT tool in the CAN configuration area.
Depending on the module type, up to 8 or 16 RX and TX modes can be defined using preset options

CAN configuration

In this example, CAN packets are sent every 500ms via the CAN bus to CAN ID 700.

Screwless connector system

The customer’s connection wiring of the inputs and outputs is carried out via screwless, pluggable terminal strips. The conductor connection is made by a so-called actuating tool.
A locking and ejection mechanism facilitates the insertion and removal of the complete terminal strip.

Handling

Step 1

Remove the operating tool from the scope of delivery.

Step 2

Insert the operating tool firmly into the side opening in the direction of conductor connection.

Step 3

Now insert the stripped conductor into the open terminal contact.

Schritt 4

Pull the operating tool out again.

Step 5

Check the correct connection of the conductor. It should now no longer be possible to pull it out easily.
